Bible Resources by Africans, for Africans

Our national ministry teams in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo have been working hard to provide children’s ministry leaders in their communities with Bible resources for teaching boys and girls. In a region of the world that relies heavily on oral communication, they encounter unique challenges as they work to help children’s ministry leaders make the Bible come alive for children using our biblical model of discipleship found in Deuteronomy 6. The journey from writing to publishing Their publishing process began with a quarterly “Children’s Worker Journal.” This newsletter provided local churches with Bible lessons, crafts and activities…

EGM’s Latin America Ministries Gather

EGM’s ministries in Latin America are gearing up for an exciting gathering this February! Teams of leaders from Argentina, Chile, and Mexico will be joining together in Mexico City on February 18-23. They will also be joined by Oliver Cardenas, Krysten Norkaitis, Quinton Hufferd, David Jesse, David Overstreet and Daniel Watts from our U.S. headquarters. Working with who is already working One of EGM’s core values is National Leadership. We believe that the people who are best suited to help equip local churches in any country are the Christian leaders who already live there. This flows out of our understanding of incarnational…

31 Days of Prayer: Confidence in God

Through the month of January, EGM is sharing 31 ways to pray for children around the world. On day 29, we pray that God would help children have confidence in His plan for their lives. Let’s face it — life is pretty hard. We all have struggles. Some of them are problems of our own making. Others are things completely out of our control. But either way, challenges and bad times will come. We do our children a disservice when we pretend they won’t. Shielding them from the realities of life doesn’t make them stronger. Teach them from their youth…

31 Days of Prayer: Godly Grandparents

Through the month of January, EGM is sharing 31 ways to pray for children around the world. On day 15, we prayed that God provide wisdom, knowledge and understanding to children.   Gladys Watts was my grandmother, and she had an enormous effect on my life. When I was a young boy, my grandmother told me that she knew from my birth (on Christmas Day) that God had a special plan for my life. As a rebellious teenager, she told me that she was aware of “the way I was living,” but still knew that God had a plan for my…

31 Days of Prayer: Wisdom, Knowledge and Understanding

Through the month of January, EGM is sharing 31 ways to pray for children around the world. On day 15, we prayed that God provide wisdom, knowledge and understanding to children. One of the great examples of biblical wisdom is found in Solomon, one of the kings of Israel. When God appears to Solomon in a dream and offers anything he desires, Solomon asks for wisdom and knowledge (2 Chronicles 1:7-10). Because Solomon asks for wisdom above wealth, possessions, death of his enemies, or long life, God is pleased and grants his request. We look to Solomon as an example…

31 Days of Prayer: Children with Special Needs

Through the month of January, EGM is sharing 31 ways to pray for children around the world. On day eight, we are praying that children with special needs receive love and understanding.   Jesus lived a very strategic life. In His relatively short time here on earth, He focused on people and prioritized things that were of utmost importance to Him. Jesus showed us time and time again how much He loves people. He loves each one of us so much that he made the ultimate sacrifice by dying on the cross to save us from our sins. Jesus loves…

The Wondrous Awe of Christmas

“Come!” they told me… “A newborn King to see!” “Our finest gifts we bring…” “To lay before the King!” “So, to honor Him when we come.” Children love Christmas. There’s something about the season that grabs their attention. They love the presents – both giving and receiving them; the trees; the lights; the decorations; the music. Over the years, I’ve realized more and more that the greatest reason children love Christmas is because they love the story of the baby Jesus, lying in the manger. It’s an idea that seems to speak in a peculiar way to their innocent hearts;…

God Sent a Child

The young 21-year-old was “helping” in the two-year-old’s children’s ministry class where he volunteered on Sundays. The Children’s Director knew that he was struggling to understand the gospel but still wanted to serve. He was a physics student desperate to grasp what it meant to “believe.” On a Sunday in December, the two-year-olds had a “Happy Birthday Jesus” party for Christmas that included singing. During their rendition of “Jesus Loves Me,” the Spirit of God came over that young man through the simple lyric of those children. He surrendered his life to Christ that day. That young man was me….

3 Ways to Make Sibling Rivalry Even Worse

Being aware of sibling rivalry is a crucial element in relational children’s ministry and of course it is not something new. When I was a young children’s pastor, I met a couple with two children — a daughter and fun loving little boy. Their son reminded me of…me, when I was six. He was ornery; when he entered the room, the teachers would cringe a bit. Not as bad as when I was little, but close! His sister was a superstar; well spoken, great grades, right answers and the classic first child over-achiever. He was in her shadow, trying to…

Taking School Out of Children’s Ministry

Children’s ministry work has some classic stories, none more famous than the teacher who began her Sunday School lesson asking the children to guess what she was describing: “This thing lives in trees (pause) and eats nuts (pause)…” No hands went up. “And it is gray (pause) and has a long bushy tail (pause)…” The children were looking at each other, but still no hands raised. “And it jumps from branch to branch (pause) and chatters and flips its tail when it’s excited (pause)…” Finally one little boy tentatively raised his hand. The teacher breathed a sigh of relief and called…
